my screen res is 1920 x 1080 but i don't like the icons to distract from any artwork on my desktop so i won't download anything larger than 1280 x 1024. ~i put a border around the picture/artwork in the color palette (usually in the darker range) and arrange my icons on the border. than way i have an unobstructed view of the (framed) picture/scene.

Please make it as much as possible! It's MUCH better just to have a gigantc picture and fit it to the screen than to have a picture that only just fits at it's normal size.
